Joseph Rowe was a normal cap gun toting five year old when he became ill with polio. The disease left him unable to breathe or move his arms. He has spent his life in wheelchairs equipped with portable ventilators by day and sleeping in an "iron lung" at night.
Yet, he used his feet to -
- write and type his way through school as an exceptional student, earning bachelor's and master's degrees with straight "A's."
- paint landscapes and portraits in oil and acrylic.
- excel in a twenty nine career with a major information technology company as a programmer, senior systems architect and software manager.
- lead disability rights organizations at his college and the city of Dallas.
- drive specially equipped vans
- serve his church as a Sunday school teacher, assisting minister and congregation president.
- build rockets, robots and dollhouses.
- cook gourmet meals.
- survive many close calls with death due to illnesses and accident.
- serve as a leader in the 2008 Obama campaign.
Rolling Uphill chronicles his journey and the people who gave him a push along the way. Join him as he faces struggles and triumphs with courage, determination, faith, hope and humor.
Many have found his story uplifting. Perhaps it will inspire you to face the challenges in your life.
"It is not very often I get to polish something this good."

Rolling Uphill A Life of Hope and Determination Joseph Rowe 9780615727837 Books Reviews
Life's a challenge when you can't breathe. Spend some time with Joe Rowe -- warrior, polio survivor, quite the storyteller -- and see the face of achievement against monster odds.
This memoir, penned by a man of faith and grit, of resilience and adaptation, bespeaks determination in so many forms. Reflect on all that the author has accomplished next time you're tempted to call in sick because your trick knee, the one Tuffy Smith scissor-locked in that JV game your freshman year, always hurts when it's cold and it's cold today and you're not going. "Rolling Uphill" forever puts our daily adversities in a more healthy perspective.
This autobiography really touched me. My best discripter is poignant. I found it an easy read although it left me emotionally rattled. The format of many short chapters to cover spefic incidents and time periods gave the book a cadence that kept me engaged. The fact that this is a true story makes it so much more interesting than fiction. In fact, a fictional account would not be believable. I felt not only the hardship experienced by the disabled author but also the effects the disability had on his family, friends and coworkers. The love of the author's mother for her stricken child and the lifelong commitment of the mother was amazing. The humility of the author is witten all over each page. This story sticks with you.
It was hard to put this book down once I started reading it. You will laugh, cry, and search your own heart--a story of amazing accomplishments against unbelievable odds. After reading Mr. Rowe's memoir, I hope to never again complain about any difficulties I encounter in life. This book is a testimonial to the power of faith, love and determination. Don't miss it!
A nice history of polio and TIRR with the added bonus of Joe's life history.
I just finished the book and couldn't put it down. Joe has escaped death so many times and lived to write about it in this memorable book. His life has been a constant uphill battle to achieve what we as non-disabled people take for granted. He continually gives credit to the wonderful friends and relatives who made his incredible life possible. I would recommend this book to anyone and plan to purchase more copies for gifts.

This book isn't so much about overcoming obstacles (though that's certainly part of it), but it's really about appreciating the people in your life and the things they bring to it. The book was a refreshing breeze of positivity that will leave you feeling spiritually bouyed.
I ordered this book out of curiosity and nostalgia, as I used to work at the same company as the author. But as I read about the struggles and successes in Joe's life, I became acutely aware of how I personally had allowed a relatively minor physical situation to negatively impact my life. I found myself inspired by Joe's zest for life during what I would have deemed insurmountable situations. I believe anyone who has had a physical or emotional set-back in their lives will be inspired to fight on and move past it after reading Joe's book. I know I was.
This is truly an amazing story. I've read the other reviews and I have to agree with all the good things said. The book was suggested in a blog that I read, so I decided to buy it to help out Joe Rowe. I never thought I'd enjoy it so much. His determination is unbelievable. What courage he has. I am in awe of him. I can't imagine going through all the things he has and still have this wonderful attitude. So inspiring!
