When Leander Jordan and Paul Settles enlist in the Union army, they each carry deep and dangerous secrets. And when they meet in a Union hospital, they begin to discover each other’s secrets and form a bond that will prove impossible to break. That bond will give them both the courage to survive the war as well as to recognize the importance of family, loyalty, and love. Kathy Cannon Wiechman’s debut novel—told in two voices—powerfully transports readers to the homes, waterways, camps, hospitals, and prisons of the Civil War. An extensive author’s note comments on the book’s research and includes archival images.

Like a River edition by Kathy Cannon Wiechman Children eBooks

I always wanted to know more about the Civil War, and the lives and mindset of the people of that time. But NEVER have I found a book as captivating and so full of details of the war. The feelings and everyday lifestyles of the people of that time were alive and clear. While Like a River is geared toward a younger audience, it was so well written that there was never a dull moment. The characters, their thoughts and feelings, and every detail were enlightening. I would highly recommend this book for older children as well as all adults who have any interest whatsoever in the Civil War.

Like a River edition by Kathy Cannon Wiechman Children eBooks Reviews

This book should be placed on every young adult and every reading clubs list.
My 5th grade daughter was assigned this as part of a school book club. The book club is sponsored through a local university and they choose the books. There has been one book so far that was really not age appropriate for a fifth grader as there was some sexual content included. This book, however, is a great read and quite age appropriate. I have begun reading the books with my daughter, in part due to the one questionable book, and this was an easy and interesting read for her. The book has 78 chapters, some as short as a page and a half, and she read it in a long weekend. My daughter was so interested in this book and the characters that we found ourselves looking up the places they talked about on the map and discussing information about the war. The choice of this author to write a historical fiction based on the Civil War was wonderful, especially since this History topic isn't really covered in school anymore. My daughter loved the book!
A captivating story, beautifully written. The historical aspect of the story was interesting, but it was the characters who really drew me in. I can't wait until my nephews are old enough to read this book!
My son had to read this book for his Summer project. He hates to read but enjoyed this book. I picked it up and started reading it out of curiosity. Turns out I couldn't put it down.....I read the entire book it one day and loved it.
This book was very detailed about the Civil War. It was nice to have it placed in fa irst person viewpoint. My 13 year old really enjoyed being able to learn more about this time period. The only reason I'm giving it a four was it started off a bit slow but gained speed. Also, my daughter felt that there could been more of an ending considering the build up leading up to the end. But overall a really great read.
I love this book. It is one of those great young adult novels that any older adult would enjoy. With Leander and Polly, Kathy Wiechman creates two very likable and very human characters, who find ways to survive through the horrors of the Civil War. The story is full of details that bring you right there alongside the characters, but it never reads like a dull history book. It’s a fast-paced, entertaining novel that makes several unexpected turns, including one major event I didn’t know actually happened until I read this book. It all wraps up with a fantastic ending that both satisfies and leaves you wanting more. I look forward to reading this novel to my children once they’re old enough, and I can’t wait to read Wiechman’s next book myself.
A splendid first novel for Ms. Wiechman and I hope there will be many more. I lived in Georgia for forty years, read many stories of the Civil War, and visited many historic sites, especially Andersonville Prison Camp. But no other book ever quite captured the inhumanity and desperation of the prisoners as Like A River did for me. And although Andersonville is only one part of the book's bigger story, those pages were haunting to read. The main characters are rich in their loyalty, sense of duty, and their will to survive against all odds--a story as relevant today as it was 150 years ago.
